Life Lessons for a 20 something

Life can be tough at times, so it’s always nice to have a helping hand now and then, to guide you through the ups and downs.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your life and give you that head start.

Love And Be Kind To Yourself

You have to be able to love yourself first before you are able to show love to others. This includes taking care of yourself, as well as being kind to yourself. This could involve relaxing to recharge, meditating to help you focus, exercising to stay fit and eating the right foods to keep you healthy. These are all part of looking after yourself. You can also show yourself some love by doing things that you enjoy, such as a hobby. When you support yourself first, you will be in a better position to help others and achieve what you want out of life.

Just Be Yourself

We often go through life trying to fit in with others, especially when we are young, usually it’s out of fear of being the odd one out. However, as you learn more things about yourself, there comes a time when you realise that you are an individual with talents, dreams, opinions and tastes. These become clearer as an adult and is part of what makes you unique and interesting.

Try to remain true to you by being yourself. It’s a lot more fun!

You Are Good Enough

You are already good enough by being you. Realise your strengths and take a moment to think about all the things you have got going for you. If you need outside confirmation, read through positive comments, feedback, compliments you have had, times when you have won things, accomplishments, awards and times you have helped others. These will all help towards building your self-worth and self-esteem. Don’t give anyone the power to put you down or make you feel less than. Stand strong in the knowledge that you are good enough.

Stop Comparing Yourself To Other People

There is a constant need, where people feel they have to look a certain way or be a certain way in order to be valued as an important part of society. This is particularly apparent in social media; where many may look like they have the perfect lifestyle with flawless images of themselves. However, this isn’t always real, in many cases it’s just a façade.

You have many qualities. Write down 10 good things about yourself. I know at first this may seem hard but try it out and you will soon find that it becomes easier. Keep these in an accessible place, so that it serves as a reminder of how great you are. When you focus on the good things about yourself and what you can do, you will soon find that there’s no need to compare yourself to others because you are brilliant just as you are. Focus on the good in you.

Learn How To Manage Your Money

Everything can be learnt, and that includes managing your money. Take the time and research how to do this effectively, this will prepare you for later in life and minimise lack of control over your finances. If you start managing your money early on you will thank yourself for it in years to come. Begin by opening accounts with a bank and start saving regularly. The habit of saving is more important than the amount you put away, at this stage. Also, make sure you spend less than you have coming in, this way you will always have money in your account.

Start Making Goals

Write down your goals and the steps it will take to make them happen. Writing them down is the first step into putting them into action. This will also provide mental clarity which will pave the way to your bigger vision.

Dream It, Do It

Believe you can do anything you set your heart and mind to, don’t become swayed or distracted. Stay on the path and take action towards your goals, this will prepare you for success.

And remember, ‘the world is your oyster’

It all starts by taking that first step.

Happiness Now

Many people want to be happy and think of it either as something that happened in the past; or that it is something to strive for and can only be found in the future. They may think that when they win the lottery they’ll be happy or when they move to a different country or get their dream job then they’ll be truly happy. They see happiness as an end goal, rather than a journey. But why wait to be happy? Happiness begins from within and you can be happy right now. You do not require permission from others and there is no need for an event to take place to make you happy. Yes, there will be times when you cannot alter certain situations and while you cannot control what happens outside you are able to control how your feelings and that includes happiness.

If you stop looking externally and to others to make you happy, you’ll realise that you have the power to make yourself happy, you are responsible for your own happiness and above all; you deserve to be happy.

Here are some tips to help you feel happy.

Play Music

Playing your favourite music is a great way of raising your vibration and changing the atmosphere around you instantly, this equally lifts your mood and makes you feel good.

Move

Movement takes you out of your head and into your body, which shifts your thoughts and can change your perspective of things. For instance, if you were worrying about something and then you hear some music you love which stirs you to start dancing; suddenly you won’t feel so bad any more as everything looks brighter. Exercise is also a great motivator.

Gratitude

Write down or say out loud 3 to 5 things you are grateful for, this will serve as a reminder of what is going well in your life and remind you of happy times that will help make you smile.

Scents

It’s amazing how the smell of your favourite perfume or aftershave can transform your mood. So, if you’re at home, work or out and about have a quick spray and know how good it makes you feel. Equally, aromatherapy scents in a room can change the whole atmosphere and can calm or energise you; either way it has a positive effect.

Positivity

If you have a mirror handy, tell yourself 3 things you love about yourself, doing this regularly boosts your confidence and increases feelings of happiness. This can also give you a spring in your step, as you can’t help but feel good.

 Kindness

Being kind to others is reward in itself and so is being kind to yourself too. Take time out to do something you love, whether this means sitting and reading leisurely or going out and doing an activity you enjoy. Being kind to yourself can be so beneficial, it is good for your mind and soul.

Achievements

Celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Remind yourself of all the great things you can do and how good it feels to be alive.

Smile

Smiling has away of making you feel brighter about yourself and helps others around you to feel happier too.

Show Yourself Some Love

Most people find it easier to show others love and attention and forget about themselves. Perhaps it is out of habit or maybe they simply do not put themselves first. There is no need to feel guilty about loving yourself. In fact, if you love yourself completely you are more likely to feel better about yourself and be a happier person to be around. Self-love is one way of ensuring you value yourself and increase your self-worth. We all need love in our lives, from others and from ourselves.

Make time for yourself, here are some ways you can begin showing yourself some self-love:

Look After Yourself

Eat and drink healthily with food and drinks that nourish and support you and exercise regularly to energise, strengthen, increase your stamina and overall health.

Quality Time To Yourself

While it is great to surround yourself with those you love, it is equally important to take some time to be by yourself. It is almost like getting to know yourself again and appreciating who you are as an individual. Even if it is just for 10 minutes a day. You can do something you enjoy or simply enjoy the peace and quiet around you to gather your thoughts.

Be Still

It is surprising how being quiet and still for just a few minutes a day can make all the difference to your day. Just slowing down physically can also help you slow down mentally and help you re-gain your natural balance and focus.

Meditate

Meditating can really help you keep calm and continue with your day. It doesn’t have to involve sitting quietly and breathing deeply. Being in a meditative state can be just as rewarding; whether this is gardening, listening to music or cooking. Do something that puts you in a position of peace and tranquillity and you’ll soon find just how  beneficial to your health and well-being it can be.

Appreciation

Show yourself some appreciation; this could mean starting a gratitude diary where you list all the things you are grateful for or you could simply say 3 things you are grateful out loud every morning. This is a great reminder of all the good in your life and also sets you up for a fantastic day ahead. When you start to appreciate yourself, others around you will follow suit and help enhance the positive atmosphere around you.

Reward

Remember to treat yourself regularly; this could mean pampering yourself with a new hair-do, facial, massage, by going out for a meal, or even by buying a special outfit. Reward yourself with something that makes you feel amazing. It’ll make the world of difference.

Encouraging words

Speak words that encourage and support you both internally and to others. This will uplift, motivate and empower you and create a positive atmosphere around you.

By showing yourself some love and appreciation regularly, you will feel better about yourself and much happier.
