You know the feeling I’m sure, so many things to do yet not enough time. How on earth are you going to get anything done when it seems like you’re running one hundred million miles an hour? This is when you need to stop!
Take a moment and breathe in deeply. You can complete things, you just don’t know how, yet.
Cue this article…
Here are 7 easy ways to help you beat procrastination and get things done.
Take Control
There are only 24 hours in a day, so the trick is to take control of this situation and believe you can master it. Mindset is key to transforming your habits and any unproductive patterns you may have picked up along the way. No judgement, we all do it. And now that you’ve become aware of it, you can do something about it.
Ask Yourself Why?
Why are you procrastinating? Once you get to the root cause of the reason, you resolve it. If saying it out loud doesn’t work for you, write it down or journal about it. As a sidenote, the first response may just be the surface reason I.e. not enough time, so keep asking yourself why? And dig deep until you uncover the core reason.
This may surprise you. For instance, the actual reason could be that you’re worried about what people will think, or question whether you’re good enough or that you just want it to be perfect and so forth. Keep digging, you’ll get there. Once you’ve discovered why, decide if it’s relevant now. Does it serve you thinking this way? Then address the issue straight on.
Break It Down
Nobody likes a to-do list as long as your arm. It’s daunting and would put most people off from even starting. So break the tasks down into smaller tasks. This makes it more manageable and less overwhelming.
Do One Thing at a Time
Try not to multi-task. You’re more likely to finish tasks when you focus on one at a time. So aim to complete one task before moving onto the next. This also means there’ll more likely be fewer mistakes, which will also mean you won’t have to re-visit or re-do them again, saving you time in the long-run.
Set a Realistic Deadline
We’d all like to get every task done as soon as possible, but being realistic about the time frame takes the pressure off you a little and helps everyone else who is involved, including your spouse, colleague, boss, children. Having said that, if you do go off track for any reason, then let the others know as soon as you can to avoid any sudden emotional outbursts or blame games. This keeps others on the same page and preserves your mental health. Not to mention keeping your blood pressure in check. Remember, preparation avoids disappointment.
Minimise Distractions
Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, chances are there’ll be distractions. While some are unavoidable, I.e. dog barking, babies crying, doorbell ringing, there are ones you can control, or at least try to keep to a minimum. For instance, turn off your smartphone or put it on airplane mode, turn off notifications or automate them to alert you at certain times of the day. Master the distractions, regain your focus, and get things done.
Give Yourself a Treat
This is such an important step and all too easily overlooked. Once you’ve completed your tasks, give yourself a treat. It doesn’t have to be lavish, just something that you enjoy. Trust me, it’ll keep you motivated, moving forward and more likely to keep procrastination at bay.
Don’t worry, as with most things, it takes commitment and consistency. With a little practice, you’ll soon get the hang of it and create a routine where procrastination will be a thing of the past.
Success starts with you.
You can do this!
