Productivity is key to success. And consistency plays a big part of it. It’s all about creating good habits that will lead to better working efficiency and enhanced productivity all round.
Here are some tips to help you level up your productivity:
1. Preparation
Try to prepare ahead of time. This takes the pressure off and gives you a clear plan.
Write your to-do list the night before. This gives you a head start in the morning. I find creating a step-by-step plan of action works well too.
It’s also worth getting a good night’s sleep, so that you’re in the right frame of mind and have the energy and the get-up-and-go to put into activities.
2. Prioritise
Don’t put lots of things on your list, as this can be overwhelming and may lead to procrastination. Write down 3 main goals with smaller, clear, detailed steps.
So, keep it short and sweet and above all doable.
3. Batch
While writing your list, try to batch similar tasks together, grouping these activities helps you go from one step to another without too much friction and with ease.
4. Play to your strengths
Work with your energy levels. Find out when you feel most energetic and when you feel tired. For instance, you may be bursting with energy in the morning but find that you tire easily in the afternoon, so do the work that requires most of of your energy in the morning.
Check your energy levels and go with it. Otherwise, if you try to do things while you’re feeling tired, it’ll be an uphill battle. Whereas if you go with it, it’ll flow much easier.
This also applies to creativity. Find out what time of the day you feel most creative and do your creative work then.
5. Take it one step at a time
I’m not a fan of multi-tasking. Do one task at a time and complete it before you move on to the next one.
6. Minimise distractions
Keep your phone on silent and put it at a distance from you if possible. This way you won’t be tempted to check it while you work. Turn off notifications on your PC or laptop. It’s important to set boundaries while you work, so that you can remain focused on the task In hand.
7. Set a timer
Assess how you spend your time. This gives you an idea about what is absorbing your time and means you can adjust it accordingly. Use this to maximise your productivity and work smarter.
Set a timer, a little like the ‘Pomodoro’ method. Work 25 mins, then take a 5 minute break. Or try working 30 minutes and take a 5 minute break. Test and see what works best for you. Setting a timer is great for focusing your attention on short sprints. Try it and see, the results may surprise you.
8. Take regular breaks
Take a breath of fresh air now and then. Especially if you’re feeling stuck or drawing a blank. This can set your creative juices flowing again.
It may even bring you a burst of fresh inspiration!
9. Reward yourself
Tick your to-do list off as you go. This can give you an enormous sense of accomplishment. And give yourself a pat on the back and a small reward for a job well done.
And if you don’t complete it all. Don’t punish yourself, it’s not the end of the world.
Review it and keep it for the next day. See it as a mini lesson. Relax, take a deep breath, and recharge.
Productivity, like most things, consists of regular habits, so don’t be hard on yourself. This can take time, but once you put these steps into place, it can be really rewarding.
10. Accountability
Accountability can also help with this; there’s nothing quite like having someone in your corner to cheer you on and keep you accountable to help you stay on track.
