Planning a holiday is an exciting time! As you get caught up in the thrill of it, it’s easy to let your usual practices slip by the wayside. Take self care for example; but, there is a way to continue your self care routine even while travelling and after you you have reached your destination. Self care doesn’t have to stop, in fact if it could even enhance your health and happiness while you are away.
Here are 12 ways to help you practice self care while you travel.
1. Planning
Planning ahead of time helps to manage stress and hopefully remove any last-minute moments of panic.
I’m a big fan of making lists. Start by making a list of things to buy, then make a list of things to pack. It may sound laborious, but this will avoid you forgetting things you wish you had packed.
2. Packing
Start packing at least the week before. It can be done gradually. This will avoid leaving it until the last minute and making it more stressful for you.
3. Rest
Try to get a good night’s sleep before you travel. Travel can be tiring anyway, without you adding a restless night to the occasion. try to rest as much as possible while travelling too. You don’t need to watch one movie after another or be constantly entertained. Try using this occasion as a reason to rest and switch off from all the activity that can drain you in everyday life.
4. Time Zone
Set your watch to the destination time if you are travelling abroad and aim to eat and sleep according to that time zone. This will give you a head start with recovering from jet lag.
5. Eat well
Eat a good, healthy meal before you leave home or eat at the airport, if you’re pushed for time. Nourishing yourself regularly while you travel helps keep you topped up with essential nutrients and will help keep you going. You still need fuel while you travel. If you can, try to pack your own healthy alternatives.
6. Be comfortable
Get comfy. Bring a few items that will help you relax on your journey. For instance, an eye mask, small inflatable pillow, perhaps a scarf and ear or noise cancelling headphones.
7. Fragrance
Put a few drops of your favourite essential oil added to water in a small spray bottle to spritz your wrists or spray it on some tissue and inhale it every now and then to give yourself a boost.
8. Hydration
Keep hydrated by drinking water regularly while you travel. This will help your body and preserve your skin from being too dehydrated. Speaking of hydration, wear a good moisturiser and keep a small tube of hand cream to apply to your hands now and then. It’ll help you feel good too.
9. Move
Stretch regularly. If you’re on a plane, walk up and down the aisle now and then. If you’re seated, wriggle your toes, rotate your neck and wrists each way. Moving regularly will help to boost circulation and help prevent a trapped nerve or thrombosis.
10. On Arrival
After you have arrived at your destination; take a shower and unpack as soon as possible. This will help you feel right at home and just to your new time zone quicker.
11. Nap
Depending on what time you arrive, if you’re tired take a nap, this will help you feel refreshed and ready to go.
12. Explore
Go for a walk and explore your new surroundings.
And above all, have fun! Whether you are travelling for work or having a holiday it’s an experience, so enjoy this time and remember to maintain self care, as this will keep you feeling good along the way.
