Have you ever felt lonely, even in a crowded room? Many people feel lonely for a variety of reasons. Whether this is due to moving to a new location, someone close passing away, or simply feeling lonely, for no particular reason.
This dark, empty feeling can keep you feeling isolated and play havoc with your self-esteem, if it gets out of control.
The good news is that you can help manage these feelings and feel empowered by doing so.
Here are some tips to help you along the way:
Realise that it is temporary
Loneliness is a state of mind and that means it won’t last forever, even though it may seem like that at the time. This can help remove that heavy, gloomy feeling, as you start focusing on ways to shift your mood.
Do something different
It seems so simple, and it can be. Just by doing something completely different from your normal routine can break the cycle. For instance, try taking a different route to work, trying out a new recipe or even wearing a brighter colour.
Take up a new hobby
Do something you’ve always wanted to do, such as taking an art class, going horse-riding or anything that you have been putting off. If you decide to join a class or group, it can be a lovely way of meeting new like-minded people, who may even become friends.
Travel
Travel often lifts our spirits and can put us in a different frame of mind. It can also be exciting, as you never know what adventures you will have along the way. If you are not keen on going abroad, try visiting another area of your country. A change of scenery alone, can work wonders for you and help boost your morale. You can go with a friend or by yourself and meet lots of people and make friends along your journey. Either way, ‘The world is your oyster’.
Exercise
Exercise is a great way of getting yourself ‘out of your head’ and getting ‘into your body,’ which can be grounding, fantastic for your health, mind and general wellbeing. It’s amazing what a new lease of life it can bring. It is fun too!
Music
Music is one of the few things in life that can transform your mood in an instant. Play some music that makes you feel good and lifts your spirits. Oh, and feel free to sing along to it too. Expressing yourself in this way is so good for your soul and puts you in a happy place.
It’s good to talk
Talking things through with someone you trust can help you see things more clearly. It is better to get things ‘off your chest’, as opposed to keeping them ‘bottled up’. If you can’t think of anyone to speak to. Therapy or counselling an also help; at first you mind feel awkward about speaking to a stranger, but it’s amazing how just talking to someone can make you feel so much better.
Remember, there is always someone out there who can help you.
You are not alone.
